A safe recovery procedure available across Poland

Every failure case is analysed individually, so the recovery method matches the device, symptoms and damage type. A clicking HDD, a disappearing NVMe drive, a degraded NAS and a formatted memory card need different first steps. If you are unsure what to do first, start with the safe first steps to follow after a drive stops working.

If the device is unstable, stop testing it and ask before running another repair tool.

When to interrupt would have been

Signs of storage device failure

  • the disc taps, squeaks, beeps or system starts very slowly,
  • nook disappears from BIOS/UEFI, appears randomly or has a capacity,
  • Do not format a RAW partition or confirm initialisation prompts.
  • Do not run CHKDSK, First Aid or "repair drive" tools on media that contains important data.
  • Do not start a RAID/NAS rebuild without diagnostics and a copy of the member disks.

What not to do

Do not increase the risk of overwriting

  • don't run a computer with a disk multiple times that makes unusual sounds,
  • do not install recovery software on the same disk,
  • don't format the tool and don't run CHKDSK or disk repair,
  • do not open the hard drive yourself,
  • in the case of RAID/NAS, do not initialize the matrix and do not restart without diagnosis.

There is no guarantee of zero risk with damaged storage devices, but the process of diagnostics and work on a sectoral copy minimises the risk of deterioration of data status.
