“Do you want to format the drive?” — Why the answer is NO! What does it mean when a drive is RAW?
A hard drive (HDD) or SSD is like a huge library. For the system (Windows/macOS) to know where specific books (files) are stored, it needs a catalog. That catalog is the file system (usually NTFS, FAT32 or exFAT). With symptoms like these, the safest path is professional data recovery from platter drives instead of running more “live” tests.
When you see the RAW file system, it means that the “catalog” has fallen apart. The data itself (your photos, videos, Excel files) is still physically on the drive platters, but the operating system no longer knows how to reach it. To the computer, the drive looks “raw” (raw) and empty, so it foolishly suggests formatting it to create a new structure.
Why did the drive become RAW? (Causes)
This rarely happens “by itself.” The most common causes we see among clients from Warsaw’s Białołęka and Tarchomin districts are:
-
Unsafe hardware removal: Unplugging the USB connector while data is still being written.
-
Voltage spike: USB port failure or a power outage while the drive is operating.
-
Bad sectors (the most dangerous): Physical damage to the drive surface where the partition table is stored.
-
Viruses: Malware that intentionally damages the partition header.
“Do you want to format the drive?” — Why the answer is NO! — details
This is the most important part of the article. If you click YES, the computer will overwrite the old (damaged but still existing) file table with a new, empty structure. It is like demolishing a library and building a new empty hall on top of the ruins.
-
Before formatting: The data is still on the drive; only the map to it is missing. Recovery is highly likely.
-
After formatting: Part of the data becomes irreversibly overwritten by the new file system structures. The chances of recovery fall, and the cost of the service rises.
What should you do? Step-by-step home diagnostics
Before you panic, check whether the problem is logical (software) or physical (hardware). If the drive has bad sectors or is unstable, laboratory HDD data recovery is usually performed by sector-by-sector imaging.
Step 1: Listen to the drive
Put your ear close to the enclosure. Is the drive running quietly with a steady hum?
-
✅
YES: That is a good sign. It is probably only a logical error.
-
❌
NO (clicking, squealing or grinding sounds): Disconnect the power immediately! That means a mechanical head failure. Every second of operation destroys more data. No software will help here — a laboratory is needed.
Step 2: Check another port/cable
Sometimes the culprit is the computer’s USB port or a damaged cable. Connect the drive to another computer. If the “RAW/Format” error still appears, the problem is in the drive.
Step 3: Do NOT run CHKDSK
You will find advice online saying: “type chkdsk X:/f in the console.” Do not do it. CHKDSK is a brutal tool. Its goal is to repair the file system, not to save your photos. If it encounters errors, it will “cut out” damaged file fragments (your files!) just to get the partition mounting again. Very often, after CHKDSK runs, files are chopped up and impossible to open.
How do we recover data from a RAW partition at Dysk i Spółka?
At our laboratory at Jana Kowalczyka 1, unit 8, 2nd floor, we do not guess. The procedure is as follows:
-
Binary copy: We never work on the original. We create a 1:1 image of your drive onto our servers using hardware write blockers. This ensures that the condition of the drive cannot worsen during the process.
-
Hex analysis: An engineer examines the drive’s hexadecimal code to find fragments of the old partition table (MFT).
-
Virtual reconstruction: We rebuild the directory structure in our system’s memory.
-
Data extraction: We recover your files with their original names and folder paths.
Summary: A RAW drive is not a death sentence
Seeing a formatting prompt raises your blood pressure, but in 95% of cases data from a RAW drive can be recovered — provided you do not take rash actions.
Golden rules:
- Do not click “Format.”
- Do not use the CHKDSK command.
- If the drive makes strange sounds, disconnect it.
